Is it worth paying high price for AVS charger for iPhone 17 ?

Recently, with the launch of the Apple iPhone 17 series and the introduction of the new 40W dynamic power adapter, bringing AVS into the key topic in 3C field.. Whether the iPhone 17 series supports this new protocol, and whether consumers need to purchase this expensive charger to achieve a faster charging experience, have become top cared question among consumers.

Introduction and Origin of the AVS Protocol
AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) is an adjustable voltage output mechanism introduced by USB-IF in the Extended Power Range (EPR) of the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) 3.1 specification.

Under the specifications of USB PD 3.0 released in 2017, PD only supported fixed voltage levels and the PPS (Programmable Power Supply) mechanism. Meanwhile PPS allowed voltage adjustments in 20mV steps within the 5-20V range, along with current adjustments in 50mA steps.

The USB PD 3.1 specification released in 2019, supporting the PPS (Programmable Power Supply) mechanism, also introduced the EPR (Extended Power Range) mode. This mode supports higher fixed voltages of 28V, 36V, and 48V, and incorporates AVS, specifically EPR AVS, which enables fine-grained voltage adjustment in 100mV steps within the 15-48V range.
The latest USB PD 3.2 specification released in 2024 extends the Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) capability to the standard power range below 100W, known as SPR AVS. This allows for fine-grained voltage adjustment in 100mV steps within the 9-20V range.

Now comes the key question most users care, do i have to buy AVS charger for my iPhone 17 series to achieve smooth charging?
Based on analysis of the charging curves and actual test results for the entire iPhone 17 series, these models currently do not support the PD 3.2 SPR AVS protocol adopted by Apple's new 40W dynamic power adapter.  iPhone 17 series continues to use the fast charging solutions PD protocol, which has been using since iPhone 15 series, iPhone 16 series, From actual test, it is easy to find that iPhone 17 series can achieve around 40W in the most time. Comparing with 3rd party usb chargers, the time from 0 to 100% has little difference from Apple's 40W dynamic power adapter. In other words, AVS doesn't bring any speical charging experience to users. Indeed, there is no device to support AVS in the market.

Although iPhone 17 series don't support AVS protocol, but it is easy to achieve by OTA updating. It is not worth to pay high price for AVS fast chargers. But more and more brands will introduce their own AVS charger soon, with better price and performance.

What power usb charger should users buy for their iPhone 17 series? By our test, 3rd party 45W usb chargers provide almost same performance as Apple original chargers. It would be perfect to buy a 45W wall charger from your trust brands. What usb charger does ZONSAN recomment to match iPhone 17 series?
